Este concurso de fotografía versa sobre la belleza de jardines, plantas y flores, espacios naturales únicos... Y es que el International Garden Photographer of the Year es una de las principales competiciones mundiales especializadas en fotografía botánica.
Este concurso se divide en 11 categorías principales junto a numerosos premios especiales, incluido el fotógrafo de botánica más joven del año (Young Garden Photo of the Year) y una categoría exclusiva para dispositivos móviles (Gardens on the Go). Está organizado en asociación con el Real Jardín Botánico de Kew (situado al sudoeste de Londres, Inglaterra), el famoso jardín botánico de 120 hectáreas de superficie (no en vano es uno de los bancos de semillas más importantes del planeta) donde se exhibirán las imágenes ganadoras, seguido de un programa continuo de exposiciones itinerantes tanto en Reino Unido como en el resto de países del mundo. Recordemos que los Jardines de Kew forman parte de la lista de sitios Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco desde 2003.
Contemplaremos algunas de las mejores fotografías de jardinería, plantas y paisajes de fotógrafos aficionados y profesionales de todo el mundo.
Desde el retrato hasta la panorámica, desde lo peculiar y divertido, hasta lo absolutamente maravilloso, estas fotografías reflejan el atractivo eterno del jardín y muestran de forma vívida las imágenes de un planeta verde. Las categorías incluyen Belleza de las plantas, Vida silvestre en el jardín y Paisajes de flores silvestres, entre otras.
En 2017, el ganador fue Lee Acaster (también primer premio en la categoría de árboles y bosques) por su fotografía Left.
En 2018, una imagen de la vasta región ecológica conocida como el Cerrado en Brasil realizada por Marcio Cabral de Brasilia, Brasil, se alzó como la mejor foto del año en el certamen.
El primer premio del certamen tiene una dotación única de 7.000 euros.
Cerrado sunrise
El indiscutible ganador de la edición de 2018 ha sido Marcio Cabral de Brasil con su instantánea “Cerrado sunrise” (Amanecer en Cerrado). El Cerrado es una amplia región de sabana tropical de Brasil. "Marcio ha capturado una visión espectacular de la vida vegetal en esta zona, mostrando las hermosas flores de Paepalanthus chiquitensis, que se extienden en innumerables filamentos hacia la primera luz del sol naciente. Es artística y técnicamente brillante, ya que despliega un excelente uso y comprensión de los equipos, los procesos posteriores a la captura, el color y la exposición. Tiene la capacidad de hacernos sentir sorpresa, como si experimentara la vida vegetal en este planeta por primera vez. A medida que los ecosistemas, como el cerrado de Brasil, se ven amenazados, esta imagen nos urge a todos a documentar, comprender y proteger nuestros paisajes vulnerables, con una pasión aún mayor", han comentado los jueces.
